Understanding PPI (Pixels Per Inch)

What is PPI?

PPI (Pixels Per Inch) measures the pixel density of a display. It indicates how many pixels are packed into one inch of screen space. Higher PPI means sharper, more detailed images.

PPI Quality Ratings

  • Below 100 PPI: Low density, visible pixels
  • 100-150 PPI: Standard desktop displays
  • 150-250 PPI: Good quality, sharp text
  • 250-350 PPI: High density, Retina displays
  • 350+ PPI: Very high density, modern phones

How to Calculate PPI

The formula for calculating PPI is:

PPI = √(Width² + Height²) / Screen Size (inches)

Where Width and Height are the resolution in pixels, and Screen Size is the diagonal measurement in inches.

Common PPI Values

  • iPhone 15 Pro: 460 PPI
  • Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra: 500 PPI
  • MacBook Pro 14": 254 PPI (Retina)
  • 27" 4K Monitor: 163 PPI
  • 24" 1080p Monitor: 92 PPI
